To help us pray God’s will, we must answer the question: Why do we pray for our leaders? The Bible says the reason is “that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty” (1 Timothy 2:2). To get this result, God’s will is that we pray for our representatives to fear and love the LORD, and to protect our God-given rights. This is more Biblical than praying for leaders to have wisdom since “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10) and God is not with those against Him (Psalm 7:11). Since the USA is a Christian Republic where the Constitution states that “We the People” are in charge, we must pray for all Americans to fear and love God, as-under God-we are in charge of our government.
Let’s start in the previous chapter, to get the context of 1 Timothy 2. In 1 Timothy 1:7-10, we see Paul calling for righteousness and warning against the lawless and insubordinate, including whoremongers, them that defile themselves with mankind (sodomites, homosexuals), liars… In 1 Timothy 1:17, Paul acknowledges God as King, saying, “Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, theonly wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Then the verse before chapter 2, Paul delivered Hymenaeus and Alexander to Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme (1 Timothy 1:20).
This is the Biblical context of 2 Timothy 2, as there are no chapter divisions in Paul’s letter. Paul then says, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men” (2 Timothy 2:1).
We never pray for politicians disobeying God’s Word that God would strengthen, protect, and bless them. We know He forbids that and judgment comes to those who help God’s enemies (2 Chronicles 19:2, Romans 1:32, Psalm 129:5-8). If politicians refuse to serve God, the Bible teaches for us to cry out to the LORD for Christians who fear God to immediately replace those refusing to follow Him. This is so we have liberty and don’t suffer in more judgment by perpetuating their sin (Judges 3:9, 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, 2 Samuel 23:3). The Daily Biblical Prayer for GovernmentTM that I invite you to pray is:
The USA serves Jesus Christ. We devoutly recognize Your “Supreme Authority and just Government… in all the affairs of men and of nations”. We love You and we love one another. May we and our representatives, schools, courts, law enforcement, and military:
1) Fear You, 2) Call for Christian religious liberty,
3) Insist to have our God-given rights of life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, property, conscience…,
4) Be truthful, and 5) Hate covetousness.
We cry out for Christian leaders to immediately replace those in sin.
One Nation Under God. In God We Trust.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
You and your church are asked to pray this daily prayer based on: Isaiah 9:6, Mark 12:30-31, Exodus 18:21, 2 Cor. 6:14-18, Luke 22:26, Genesis 1:27, Judges 3:9. Include “by Rev. Steven Andrew” to reuse.
